With over two decades of experience, Casuarina is one of the leading representatives of samba in Brazil. Born in the samba circles of early 2000s Rio de Janeiro, the group has captivated audiences across Brazil and abroad with its refined musicality, vibrant repertoire, and deep respect for the genre’s history. The current lineup features Gabriel Azevedo (vocals and pandeiro), Daniel Montes (seven-string guitar), João Fernando (vocals and mandolin), and Rafael Freire (vocals and cavaquinho) — musicians who engage with samba’s legacy, keeping its spirit alive with authenticity and creativity. They have released eleven albums, including the acclaimed “MTV Apresenta: Casuarina” (2009) and “No Passo de Caymmi” (2014). Their most recent release, “Retrato” (2024), marks a new phase and celebrates 23 years of their journey, featuring compositions by Arlindo Cruz, Sombrinha, Zeca Pagodinho, among other iconic names. In addition to performing across Brazil and on international stages, the group regularly appears at Beco do Rato — a landmark venue in Rio’s Lapa district — where they preserve the essence of samba circles and the collective spirit that has always inspired their path. Whether in the warm energy of an intimate roda, at major festivals or on world tours, Casuarina celebrates popular culture with elegance — bridging generations and reaffirming samba’s power as a pillar of Brazilian music.
